Professor Draculino and the Coral Belt: A Living Legacy at Gracie Barra Texas
In the world of martial arts, few achievements carry the weight and respect of the Coral Belt (Red and Black). Recently, the Jiu-Jitsu community celebrated a historic moment when our leader, Professor Vinicius “Draculino” Magalhães, received his 7th Degree, elevating him to the rank of Master.
For students at Gracie Barra Texas in Webster/League City, this is more than just a promotion; it is confirmation that we are learning directly from the source. But what exactly does this belt mean, and why is Draculino’s journey so unique?

The Meaning of the Coral Belt: 31 Years of Dedication
The Coral Belt is not something conquered merely through tournament victories or athletic ability. It is a testament to time, loyalty, and contribution to the sport.
According to the IBJJF (International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation) graduation system, to be eligible for the Coral Belt (7th Degree), a practitioner must:
Have been an active Black Belt for 31 years.
Have maintained exemplary conduct inside and outside the dojo.
Have contributed significantly to the growth and teaching of Jiu-Jitsu.
Receiving this belt means that Prof. Draculino has dedicated more time to being just a Black Belt than most people spend in their entire careers. It is a symbol of mastery that places him in an elite group in the history of the gentle art.
The Competitor Era: Gracie Barra’s “Old School”
Before becoming the mentor we know today, Draculino was one of the most feared and technical competitors of his generation. Trained directly by Carlos Gracie Jr. at the legendary first Gracie Barra school in Rio de Janeiro, he was instrumental in establishing the team’s dominance in the 90s.
Technical Pioneer: Draculino was an innovator. He is often credited with developing and refining complex positions, such as the Spider Guard, long before they became popular.
Consecrated Champion: His titles speak for themselves: Pan-American Champion, Brazilian Champion, and multiple-time World Medalist. He competed in an era where there were not many weight classes or age divisions—it was pure technique against strength.
The Professor: The Creator of Armies
Perhaps even more impressive than his fighting career is his legacy as a professor. By founding Gracie Barra Belo Horizonte (GBBH), Draculino transformed the state of Minas Gerais into a breeding ground for world champions.
He formed legendary names like Rômulo Barral, Samuel Braga, Felipe Pena (Preguiça), and many others. His unique ability is not just teaching a move, but molding the character and mindset of a champion. This same methodology is the foundation of teaching here at Gracie Barra Texas.
The Entrepreneur: The Visionary Who Conquered Texas
The Coral Belt achievement also celebrates Draculino the Entrepreneur. When he decided to move to the United States, he didn’t choose the easy path. He saw potential where others didn’t.
By establishing Gracie Barra Texas, he didn’t just open an academy; he planted the GB flag in the state.
The “Mecca” of Texas: As we mentioned earlier, the explosive growth of Jiu-Jitsu in Texas owes much to his arrival. He professionalized instruction, established quality standards, and transformed our region into a global hub for the sport.
Leadership: Today, as Regional Director, he oversees dozens of schools, ensuring that the legacy of Master Carlos Gracie Jr. is preserved with integrity.
Train with a Living Legend
Receiving the Coral Belt is the crowning achievement of a life dedicated to Jiu-Jitsu. For us in Webster and League City, it is a daily honor to share the mats with a 7th Degree Master.
